The Important Role of Orthodontics in Management of TMH and Airway Issues image

The Important Role of Orthodontics in Management of TMJ and Airway Issues

Friday, March 11th, 2022 – 11AM-6:30PM ET

Recent advancements in technology and research have allowed dentists to understand the role underlying conditions, including temporomandibular joint and airway disorders, play in the development of malocclusion. Armed with this knowledge, dentists have a unique opportunity to not only determine the root cause(s) of the malocclusions we see in our practices, but to also contribute to the design of interdisciplinary treatment plans directed at benefiting TMJ and airway health and stability. Through case presentations and overview of current research, this lecture will provide a complete picture on how to use CBCT and MRI technologies to identify, diagnose, and categorize patients prior to treatment. There will also be heavy focus on how to sequence treatment based on TMJ and airway condition, and design patient-specific therapy to maintain the health of the TMJ and airway for the long-haul.

A lack of mastication and freedom in movement are trapping bites in kids. Combined with deficiencies, allergies, and breathing disorders, this limits the proper vectors of growth in the face. When thinking in Biofunctional dynamic occlusion, we start by stabilizing the mandible position through different techniques, such as direct tracks of Planas, to be able to create freedom in the mandible. This verticalization pattern in combination with the freedom of movement creates a better osteogenesis. By applying friction plates, we can stimulate facial growth based on angulations of pathway directions. This lecture will cover different techniques that can be employed in Biofunctional Dynamic Occlusion where the arch of closure creates the biodynamics for proper muscle balance and joint stabilization.
